The refrigerator + freezer combo is one of the greatest inventions ever. Because of this useful appliance, we can now store food for a very long time without it getting spoiled.

However, like many other applicances, it is prone to breakage from wear-and-tear. 

We’re sure there have been days when you return from a long trip only to find that the food in your freezer has been thawed accidentally. 

Later on you’ll hear that there was a power outage or that there's something’s broken in your freezer.

This can be a risky issue because if frozen food thaws it might go bad. Worst still is if it thaws and gets refrozen afterwards, which could lead to the food potetially becoming poisonous.

All you need are three simple items: a mug, a coin and some tap water. 

Instructions:

1. Fill the mug with water and place it inside the freezer. Once the water is frozen, take the coin, place it right on top of the ice and return the mug inside the freezer.

2. Upon returning home after a long trip, check the position of the coin inside the mug. 

3. If the coin has fallen to the bottom of the mug then that means, at some point while you were away, the freezer didn’t work. This means that the food in the freezer defrosted and may have spoiled. If the coin is still on top of the ice or in the middle of the mug then your food may still be good to eat. 

4. It might be good idea to leave the mug and coin inside the freezer all the time. That way you can monitor how safe your food is if you experience a power outage.
